GEOMETRY
Mrs. Dorothy Rich
2013-2014
Geometry Supplies:
  • Glencoe Geometry textbook
  • 3-ring binder (2”- 3”) with dividers just for this course
  • A good compass, protractor and ruler
  • Any scientific calculator (graphing calculator not necessary)-TI-30 or TI-36 are good choices
  • A three-ringed pouch to help hold tools in the notebook

If you buy a Texas Instruments calculator we would appreciate you TI-Rewards symbol of the package.  The math department can order some much-needed supplies with these.
Hopefully you have been working on your Summer Math Review Packet printed off of the website.  It must be finished completely, neat, in order, all work shown, and turned in on the first day of class.  This will not be accepted late!!    This will be the first grade of the new year and it is a 100 point assignment.  If you completed your packet early in the summer look over it just before school starts. You are responsible for knowing this material and it will be part of some early assessments.
Geometry is a vital math course and it is important that students understand class procedures.  I will be demanding a lot of my students.  You should know up front that it is essential to keep up with your math and stay organized from the beginning of the year. I am enclosing a copy of the rules for Geometry.  Please read, sign and return them the first day of class.
I assign homework every night and expect it to be done every night.  It is extremely important to start the assignment the day of class and not the night before it is due.  If it is started on the day of class and you have questions, you can come in during the next day and get help during XL or fourth block.  You can then complete the assignment that night and have it ready for class the next day.  I will not accept as an excuse for missing homework that you did not understand.  Homework will be checked as soon as class starts.  An incomplete assignment will receive a “0” on homework.  If work is not shown on the homework paper and it is required to do the problem, a zero will be given on the homework.  Students are to do all work on their homework paper and not on scrap paper that they have thrown away. There is a very strong correlation between homework averages and term grades in this class.
After every chapter test students will have an Algebra Review worksheet due.  It will be given out at the beginning of the chapter so there will be plenty of time to start on it early.  The Algebra Reviews are a very important part of the term grade.  They are not over material we cover in class but material from Algebra I.  Each student is of course responsible for this material.  If help is needed it should be asked for far in advance of the due date so the student can complete the packet.
Each student should have a 3-ring binder (2”-3”) for the first day of class.  Your materials should be kept in the manner I describe below. On the first day of class I will be passing out a large packet with all materials for chapter 1.  This includes notes, worksheets, algebra reviews, chapter reviews and a syllabus

The Notebook:
Dividers need to be labeled as:
Notes, Worksheets, Homework (meaning book work),  and Tests

The Syllabus should be the very first page in the notebook so that it is easily accessible.
Notes:  Each chapter will have a note packet to go along with the notes I will be using on the digital projector and Smartboard.  All examples will be in these packets along with room to work out problems.  Before a test or quiz these sections should be reread.  If a student is absent they should get the completed notes from a classmate or read the textbook and fill them in themselves.
Worksheets: There is never enough practice in a text alone so worksheets will be used to accomplish this.  Worksheets will be a part of the homework.  Students will often be given answers to the worksheets so that they can be checked.
Homework:  All homework from the text should be put in this section.  Many of the problems will be odd so that you can check answers in the back of the book. Remember all work must be shown on the homework paper.  Often a quick quiz will be given with the exact problems form the homework.  Complete your homework for understanding not just to get it done. Then you will be sure to get a perfect score on a homework quiz.
Tests: In this section keep all returned tests and quizzes.  Old quizzes should be reworked to help in preparation for a chapter test.

Feel free to contact me by e-mailing me at drich@heritagehawks.org if you have any questions.  I look forward to a great year!
